Conceding first = No win? The alarming stat Liverpool must break against Chelsea

Liverpool have struggled to win after conceding first this season, and success against Chelsea will rest on denying the visitors at Anfield.

Liverpool have won one and lost 10 of the 13 league games this season when they have conceded the first goal.

Across all competitions, Arne Slot‘s side have conceded first 21 times from their 54 games to date, and they have won none of the last seven and only two across the campaign.

And notably, only one of Liverpool’s last 22 fixtures in league and cup has ended in a draw – the 1-1 draw with Tottenham in the middle of March.

A rare opportunity for Liverpool to win 3 home matches in a row

Liverpool require three goals from their remaining three fixtures to reach 100 goals in all competitions for the eighth season in the last nine.

And they could win a third successive home league game for only the second time since they defeated Tottenham to clinch their 20th league title in April 2025.

They have won their previous two league games at Anfield, against Fulham (2-0) and Crystal Palace (3-1), time to make it three!

Not in any of the last nine seasons have Liverpool had fewer than two players with a double-figure goals tally in the league.

Hugo Ekitike will finish this season on 11, with Mo Salah and Cody Gakpo on seven and Dominik Szoboszlai on six.

In the loss at Man United, Szoboszlai became the first Liverpool midfielder since Steven Gerrard (14 goals and 14 assists in 2013/14) to reach 10+ goals and 10+ assists in a single season (13 goals and 10 assists).

Liverpool have scored three times in the opening 15 minutes of league games this season and not once in the opening quarter of an hour in any of the last 13 in all competitions.

Chelsea have lost their last 6 league games

Chelsea have lost each of their last three away fixtures by a margin of three goals. They lost 5-2 at Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, followed by 3-0 losses at Everton and Brighton.

It means Chelsea have now lost six league games in a row for only the fourth time in their history and for the first time since November 1993.

Since defeating relegated Wolves in early February, Chelsea have won one of 10 league games, amassing five points in that time.

They will be led by Calum McFarlane, who is in interim charge for the second time this season, after taking over for a week in January following Enzo Maresca’s departure.

He will be the fifth different manager to bring Chelsea to Anfield in the last five seasons, following Enzo Maresca (2024/25), Mauricio Pochettino (2023/24), Graham Potter (2022/23) and Thomas Tuchel (2021/22).
