Broncos ink George Paton to a five-year contract extension

George Paton won’t be leaving the Broncos any time soon. The general manager has agreed to a new contract that will keep in Denver for at least another half decade.

The Broncos have signed GM George Paton to a new five-year contract, sources tell NFL Network.

There had been rumors that Paton was a candidate for the vacant GM job in Minnesota, for obvious reasons. He was in the Vikings front office from 2007-20 before coming to the Mile High City in 2021. Now, the Broncos won’t have to worry about another team try to poach their general manager.

Paton’s tenure in Denver didn’t start out well. He was the driving force behind the hiring of Nathaniel Hackett, a head coach that didn’t survive his first season. He pulled the trigger on the ill-fated Russell Wilson trade, giving up a king’s ransom for a quarterback who played only two years in a Broncos uniform. And he gave Wilson one of the worst contracts in the history of sports.

But after surviving those missteps, Paton has been part of the franchise’s turnaround. Working with head coach Sean Payton, the Broncos have gone 32-19 during the last three seasons, reaching the playoffs twice and advancing to the AFC title game in 2025.

The Broncos are hoping that trend continues. The five-year deal provides Paton the opportunity to finish what he started in Denver.
