Saints coach Kellen Moore chose not to engage with the recent Alvin Kamara discourse

Kellen Moore doesn't have anything to add to the recent discourse surrounding Alvin Kamara.

While the New Orleans Saints running back had nothing but positive things to say about the organization and the direction it is heading in a recent appearance on Terron Armstead's podcast, he has been the focal point of some drama throughout the offseason.

The Saints spent one of their biggest free agent chips on running back Travis Etienne, who is expected to have a big role in the offense after signing a four-year, $52 million contract. As an organization, the Saints have not made a firm commitment to bringing Kamara back into the mix in 2026. Add in the recent comments from former Saints safety Tyrann Mathieu, who suggested the team has mishandled the entire situation.

"I don't think the Saints are dealing with this in good faith," Mathieu said. "... This is not the way you treat your franchise all-time touchdown leader."

Mathieu went on to say, "I think the Saints would rather not have to make a hard decision and he just walk in one day, and say, 'Hey look, I'm going to retire.’"

Moore said Friday after the team's first rookie camp practice that he hadn't seen Mathieu's comments, so he was choosing not to judge or comment on them, but he also declined to give any more of a clear picture on where Kamara stands with the team.

"We're just continuing to evaluate this roster," Moore said when asked if anything had changed regarding Kamara. "So much of our time this last week have been building up for this rookie camp and getting these guys as many opportunities as we can.

"That's really been the focus; getting this thing dialed up and ready. We're excited about these young guys, and we'll continue to work through this roster."

Asked specifically if the team was evaluating Kamara's place, Moore said the organization was "evaluating the roster as a whole" and is "always trying to acquire as many different talented players as we can."

Kamara has spent his entire nine-year career in New Orleans. He is entering the final year of his third contract with the Saints, and as Mathieu alluded to, holds multiple franchise records.

He will turn 31 this summer, and is coming off his worst statistical season as a professional, posting career lows in rushing (471 yards), yards per carry (3.6) and total touchdowns (1) while appearing in 11 games, also a career low.

"Obviously we know what Alvin means to us," Moore said. "We love Alvin. We've gone through this process and we'll continue to go through it."
