The Pittsburgh Steelers still don’t have a long-term answer at the quarterback position. They’re working on bringing back QB Aaron Rodgers. They also added rookie QB Drew Allar in the third round of the 2026 NFL draft. But Rodgers isn’t a long-term answer, and Allar fell to the third round because of accuracy and big-game questions.
So, what should the Steelers do? Hope that either Allar or QB Will Howard will respond to new head coach Mike McCarthy? Wait until next year’s draft and hope they’ll be in a position to acquire a potential franchise quarterback?
“What about taking another swing and going the Supplemental Draft coming up, potentially?” beat writer Mark Kaboly asked Friday on 93.7 The Fan’s The PM Team. “I think they have been snooping around there, just doing due diligence.”
The conversation continued and Kaboly essentially confirmed that the player he thinks the Steelers would be “snooping around” about is Texas Tech QB Brendan Sorsby. If that name sounds familiar to you, there are two reasons. One, you’re already looking toward the quarterback class of 2027. Or two, you heard the news about Sorsby’s gambling problem.
That gambling problem is exactly why Sorsby could be involved in the Supplemental Draft. There’s no telling if Sorsby will ever play another down in college. If he can’t, he could very well try to go right to the NFL.
Kaboly isn’t the first person to connect the Steelers and Brendan Sorsby, either. NFL insider Albert Breer suggested the Steelers make a play for Sorsby. However, this is the first time I’ve seen that the Steelers are potentially doing their homework.
Obviously, Sorsby has an issue with gambling, and he’s checked into rehab for it. The Steelers would have to do much more than just “snooping around” to feel like any sort of investment, much less a first-round pick, is a good one.
However, Sorsby had quite a year at Cincinnati in 2025 before transferring to Texas Tech ahead of the 2026 season. He completed 61.6 percent of his passes for 2,800 yards and 27 touchdowns to only five interceptions. He also ran for 580 yards and another nine touchdowns.
Brendan Sorsby certainly has an on-field resume that suggests he’s worth taking a swing on. Will the Steelers agree? Only time will tell. However, Kaboly thinks they are doing their homework to find out.
