Bids expected: BlueCo have opened talks to sign Chelsea's next Joao Pedro for £60m - opinion

The BlueCo leadership at Chelsea handed the fanbase fresh optimism back in 2022 as they took charge of the club and spent heavily in the transfer market.

Four years on, the Blues have now spent upwards of £1.7b on new additions, but the constant change of managers has undoubtedly led to the lack of success on the pitch.

The highest the club have finished in the Premier League during their reign is fourth, highlighting the struggles despite the heavy spending in the transfer market.

A new manager needs to be appointed ahead of the 2026/27 campaign, but it still remains unclear who will lead the side after Liam Rosenior’s dismissal last month.

However, like they have done consistently in recent months, the hierarchy are once again targeted added reinforcements to help bolster the options in the senior ranks.

Chelsea open talks to land £60m talent this summer

Over the last couple of days, Chelsea have been just one of the clubs interested in a move to land Bayern Munich talisman Harry Kane when the window opens.

The England international has been in tremendous form throughout the ongoing campaign, as seen by his remarkable tally of 58 goals across all competitions.

He is in talks with the German club to extend his current contract at the Allianz Arena, but the Blues are looking to swoop in and secure his signature before the pen touches the paper.

Kane isn’t the only player in the hierarchy’s sights ahead of the summer, with Brighton and Hove Albion centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke another talent being targeted.

According to TEAMtalk, Chelsea have already established contact with the Dutchman’s agents over the possibility of a transfer to Stamford Bridge in the near future.

The report also states that the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool are also keeping a close eye on the progress of the 25-year-old ahead of the opening of the window.

However, a hefty sum will be needed to land the defender when the window opens, as Fabian Hurzeler’s side are currently demanding £60m to offload their star defender, having braced themselves for 'substantial bids'.

Why Van Hecke would be Chelsea’s next Joao Pedro

Despite the failure of many of the big-money additions in recent years, Chelsea forward Joao Pedro is one player who has impressed after joining the Blues last summer.

The Brazilian, who cost £60m nearly 12 months ago, has been the club’s starting striker this term, with the faith shown in him justified by his recent tallies across all competitions.

He’s netted 23 goals in his 50 appearances across all competitions during his debut year in West London - the most of any player currently in the senior ranks.

His latest strike against Nottingham Forest may have only been a consolation, but it is arguably his best strike since making the move to the capital last year.

If the club are to reach the next level under the guidance of any new manager, they will need to replicate such transfers, given the success of Pedro at the Bridge.

Whilst Van Hecke operates in a different role to the Brazilian, he would emulate the forward in making the move to join the Blues from fellow Premier League outfit, Brighton.

Van Hecke

The Dutchman has become one of the division’s best defensive stars in recent seasons, with his underlying stats this term highlighting his quality in the defensive third.

Van Hecke has completed a staggering total of 1979 passes in the Premier League this term - the fourth-most of any defender currently playing in England’s top-flight.

Such a figure, along with his 85% pass accuracy rate, demonstrates his quality in possession - which makes him the perfect option for the Blues should they want to play out from the back.

However, without the ball, the Dutchman has been just as impressive throughout 2025/26, as seen by his tally of 5.9 ground duels won and 1.6 tackles made per 90.

Both of the aforementioned tallies place him in the top 20% of defenders in England, which could see him be the missing piece of the club’s defensive puzzle.

Other tallies, such as 1.2 interceptions made and 3.2 aerial duels won per 90, further highlight his ability to disrupt the opposition and often dominate those who try to get past him.

£60m would be yet another huge addition from BlueCo, but it’s a move that makes sense, with Van Hecke a proven Premier League star who can massively improve the backline.

His quality both in and out of possession makes him the perfect fit for the Blues, who have often gained a reputation for being a possession-based side, but lacking that star quality at the back.

Should he get anywhere near the levels produced by his former teammate Pedro at the Bridge, it would be an astute piece of business and one that can help the side mount a push for the top four next term.
