Chelsea rescue a point at Anfield but questions remain
Chelsea left Anfield on Saturday with a hard-earned 1-1 draw against Liverpool, a result caretaker boss Callum McFarlane will likely view as a job well done given the pressure. Ryan Gravenberch put Liverpool ahead early with a brilliant strike, but Enzo Fernandez answered back, firing a precise free-kick into the net to level the scores.
That goal didn’t just restore parity; it silenced the home crowd and completely shifted the momentum. For a Chelsea side that had lost six straight league games before this, there is now a genuine sense of optimism, especially with next weekend’s FA Cup final against Manchester City on the horizon.
Here is how the players rated on one of the toughest stages in the country:
Filip Jorgensen — 6/10. The Dane was kept busy and handled himself with decent composure. He really had no chance of stopping Gravenberch’s thunderbolt.
Malo Gusto — 6/10. He put in the hard yards down the right, tracking Liverpool’s runners all afternoon. However, he didn’t get forward enough to really worry the Liverpool backline.
Wesley Fofana — 7/10. Looked sharp and confident alongside his younger teammates. He read the game well and was dominant in his individual duels for the most part.
Jorell Hato — 6/10. For a teenager with limited top-level experience, Hato held his own well at a ground as intimidating as Anfield. That’s a big positive in itself.
Levi Colwill — 6.5/10. Very calm on the ball and looked to play forward intelligently from the left. He seemed to grow in confidence as the match went on.
Marc Cucurella — 7/10. Played with high energy throughout. Cucurella was always looking to exploit space and gave Liverpool’s right side plenty of problems to solve.
Moisés Caicedo — 7.5/10. Another massive shift from the Ecuadorian. He covered an incredible amount of ground and was vital in breaking up play. In what has been a tough season, he is easily Chelsea’s most consistent performer.
Andrey Santos — 6.5/10. Showed some clever touches and linked up well with Caicedo. His influence did drop off a bit in the second half once Liverpool stepped up their press.
What makes this £90m attacker the perfect replacement for Salah?
Cole Palmer — 7/10. Floating in a free role off the right, Palmer became more dangerous the longer the game went. Chelsea looked twice as sharp whenever the ball reached his feet in the final third. He remains the team’s creative heartbeat.
Enzo Fernandez — 8/10. Scored a world-class free-kick to get Chelsea level and ran the show in spells during the second half. He stepped up exactly when his team needed a leader.
Joao Pedro — 5.5/10. Put the work in but never really looked like scoring. He was often left isolated, and after Mamardashvili smothered his best chance early on, he struggled to find his rhythm again.
Substitutes — Romeo Lavia (on 65′) — 6/10. Helped Chelsea keep the ball and settled things down in the middle.
Liam Delap (on 75′) — 6/10. Offered a bit of direct running but didn’t see enough of the ball to change the game.
Why do Liverpool fans stay till the end at Anfield Stadium?
In the end, Chelsea showed some real grit at Anfield. Taking a point back to London should keep their confidence up ahead of the trip to Wembley. The fans finally have a performance they can get behind.
