Rams Sean McVay's riddle to solve over inexperienced wide receiver depth chart

There was a great deal of concern, both before and after the NFL draft, over the depth of the Los Angeles Rams' wide receiver room. Some view the lack of attention paid to the position as a huge mistake that the team will come to regret this season. Others view the shift to a tight-end-powered offense as mitigating the need for a productive third wide receiver in this offense.

But either way, the Rams' wide receiver depth chart remains a mystery that few have truly attempted to solve. But the only way to ask questions and get closer to a solution is to forge a draft depth chart over what we know right now. And compiling what we know now takes the shape of this depth chart

LWR 17 Adams, Davante | 4 Mumpfield, Konata | 82 Scott, Tyler

RWR 12 Nacua, Puka | 88 Whittington, Jordan | 16 Edwards, Tru CF25

SWR 19 Smith, Xavier | 6 Daniels, CJ | 81 Presley, Brennan | 14 Williams, Mario

While the team has yet to reshuffle players into their most likely slots, here's what we know about the team's receiver room. After veteran starters Davante Adams and Puka Nacua, speedster Xavier Smith was the third-most popular wide receiver last season. He proved to be one of the most cost-effective receivers and may have led the team to allow Tutu Atwell to test free agency this year.

But there is more to this puzzle:

3 Sean McVay's riddles that must be solved for 2026 WR depth chart

1. Can Konata Mumpfield deliver in 2026?

While Konata Mumpfield was only targeted 23 times last season, you cannot fault the offense. He only caught 10 passes, a catch rate of just over 43 percent. That's not good. Of course, rookies tend to struggle at catching passes, as tight end Terrance Ferguson did as well. Mumpfield has proven that he can make tough catches. Now he must make catches consistently.

2. is Jordan Whittington or Xavier Smith ripe for a breakout season?

In 2025, Jordan Whittington was targeted 25 times, resulting in 171 receiving yards. Xavier Smith was targeted 24 times, resulting in 303 receiving yards. While they boasted a similar number of receptions, their skill sets are as different as night and day. Now, it's up to head coach Sean McVay to solve the riddle of who is ripe for a breakout season in 2026.

Smith may appear to be the natural choice, as his speed and production are unmatched on the current roster, but Whittington fits the new offensive philosophy of tough physical play. And both made the best out of limited opportunities in 2025.

3, How quickly can CJ Daniels prove his worth?

Many view rookie CJ Daniels as the next great wide receiver on this roster. While that could happen, he has to outplay many veterans who are already familiar with the coaching staff, the playbook, and LA's roster. That creates a massive mountain to climb for a rookie.

But if anyone can do it, CJ Daniels can.

The key will be his preseason performance. And the key to that will be how quickly he develops chemistry with rookie quarterback Ty Simpson. If Simpson is as good as advertised, Daniels will find his preseason schedule will be limited to one game.

As always, thanks for reading.
