FSG mean business: Liverpool working behind the scenes to sign "incredible" Jones replacement

Liverpool are now conducting background work to sign Atalanta midfielder Ederson, with Curtis Jones' future in doubt.

David Lynch drops Curtis Jones future update

Jones doesn't have too long remaining on his contract, with his current deal set to expire at the end of next season, and the midfielder isn't currently in line to be offered an extension.

That is according to journalist David Lynch, who said: "Contract talks with Curtis Jones are understood to have effectively ceased, and it is known that he was open to a January move to Inter Milan before his boyhood club shut the door."

At 25-years-old, the midfielder is at an age where he needs to be playing regular football, and he has been a first-team regular as of late, starting the last three Premier League games, albeit at right-back, filling in for Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley.

However, for parts of the campaign, the Englishman has only been utilised as a substitute, and he is now considering a summer exit, having attracted interest from the likes of Aston Villa and Newcastle United.

Jamie Carragher names three positions Liverpool must strengthen

Regardless of whether Jones moves on, Jamie Carragher believes Arne Slot needs to bring in a new central midfielder this summer, saying: "They don’t need to bring six or seven players in, because it’s more change, but there’s three players that need to go right into the team for me.

"Replace Mo Salah with a right winger, a right-back and a central midfielder then the players you bought last summer, like Ekitike, Isak, Wirtz, become better players."

According to a report from TEAMtalk, Liverpool are now working behind the scenes to sign Atalanta star Ederson, who is valued at around £43m by the Serie A side, amid widespread interest.

Ederson-Atalanta

Newcastle United, Manchester City, Arsenal and Manchester United are also keen on the Brazilian, so there could be competition for his signature this summer, at which point it may be vital for Slot to sign a new central midfielder.

Not only is Jones' future in doubt, but there are also question marks over Alexis Mac Allister, and there have even been suggestions the Merseyside club could swap the Argentinian for a Real Madrid star.

The Atalanta maestro could be a solid addition, given that he has been lauded as "incredible" by journalist Harry De Cosemo, and he is averaging the second-highest number of Serie A tackles (2.4) in the squad this season.

Arne Slot fires subtle jab at Mo Salah

Salah's time at Anfield is coming to an end, but Slot has taken a jab at the departing forward. Responding to the Egyptian's comments about standards at Liverpool, the manager said: "The standards are not only important in the gym.

"It’s also on the pitch. Okay. You understand me? Without me saying anything?"
