Gary Cahill gives his honest verdict on Levi Colwill’s return performance against Liverpool

Levi Colwill made his first start for Chelsea in the 2025/26 season away against Liverpool, and former Blue Gary Cahill was very impressed by his performance.

The Blues snapped their run of six consecutive Premier League defeats with a well-fought point at Anfield, drawing 1-1 after Enzo Fernandez’s free-kick goal.

Colwill impressed in our player ratings from the game, looking comfortable in the heart of what looked like a back three named by Calum McFarlane.

Chelsea fans looking for some motivation before the FA Cup final next weekend can certainly take some from their improved defensive performance against Liverpool, and Cahill was full of praise for Colwill’s past after the game.

He told Premier League Productions: “You know, before he got injured, he was one of the main centre-backs, one of the main defenders in that Chelsea team, even at the young age that he is. And he was going from strength to strength. So delighted to see him back.

“And I thought he played well, I thought he was solid today as well. So all in all, great to see him back for not just club but country as well.”

Chelsea were also buoyed by a return to the side for Reece James off the bench, however early indications hint he could be deployed in midfield against Manchester City.

Chelsea have their blueprint to beat City

McFarlane’s best result across his two interim spells at Stamford Bridge was the 1-1 draw away at the Etihad in the winter, where again Fernandez levelled the game.

McFarlane is confident that Chelsea can win the FA Cup final, and go some way to restoring some faith from supporters in the direction they are going.

Their opponents will also have an eye on the other competition they still have a chance of winning. The conclusion of the Premier League comes after the cup final.

Assuming Colwill got through today’s game unscathed, he has to be one of the first names on the teamsheet at Wembley.
