METAIRIE, La. — Former Southern Miss quarterback Braylon Braxton was on an NFL field Friday as Saints rookie mini-camp opened, looking to turn a chance into a roster spot.
Braxton joins New Orleans as a non-roster invitee. The undrafted rookie enters camp in a quarterback room featuring former second-round pick Kyle Trask and seven-year veteran Easton Stick.
In the off-season, the Saints signed former 2nd overall pick Zach Wilson, completing the room with 3rd-year pro Spencer Rattler and starting QB Tyler Shough.
For Braxton, the weekend was about competing and learning from quarterbacks who have already made it in the league.
“Seeing the way they prepare, yesterday when we got our playbooks, I was kind of, as I was studying mine, I was kind of, glancing over, seeing how they take notes, how do they process information,” Braxton said.
“Those guys have been around the game for a while in this league, they’ve made a name for themselves, kind of. And, I can only hope to do the same thing that they’ve been able to do for sure.”
Saints head coach Kellen Moore said Braxton earned his invitation after a workout with the team.
“We had good exposure from our Saints local day. And so he came in to work with us, had a great workout,” Moore said. “And so again, we wanted to bring in a few extra quarterbacks and so he’s able to get in there. We got these veteran guys who’ve played, but obviously he’s got great exposure, and it was great to have him.”
