Cody Gakpo gets the wrong attention after no touches in 40 minutes

Cody Gakpo endured an awful afternoon in Liverpool’s 1-1 draw at home to Chelsea, with Jeremie Frimpong not much better.

The Reds failed to beat a completely out-of-form Blues side on Saturday, despite taking the lead through Ryan Gravenberch.

Here we compare our player ratings with those of the Liverpool Echo, GOAL and the TIA readers.

Gakpo (3.55) was almost anonymous for Liverpool, rightly getting the lowest average rating, with the Echo being the most generous with a five-out-of-10 rating.

The Dutchman “only had his first touch in the 41st minute,” as TIA’s Henry Jackson pointed out in his post-match ratings.

Meanwhile, GOAL’s Amee Ruszkai claimed that Gakpo “looked like a player lacking confidence,” leading the line with no hold up play whatsoever.

Frimpong (4.60) produced another ineffective performance on the right wing, offering a disappointing end product.

Ian Doyle of the Echo felt that the diminutive wide man’s “deliveries lacked quality,” although he did add that he was “overlooked’ by teammates too often.

The fact that Giorgi Mamardashvili (6.30) scored highest for Liverpool says everything you need to know, though we should also point out Rio Ngumoha was not far behind (6.15)!

What the stats say: An 8.1 rating for Gravenberch

According to FotMob, Gravenberch stood out most for Liverpool, getting an 8.1 rating.

That is no doubt aided by the Dutchman’s superb goal, but he also made the second-most defensive contributions (6) for the Reds.

Interestingly, Ngumoha (7) made the most, showing that he was far more than just an attacking threat.

Alexis Mac Allister won only one of his nine duels (11%), as his torrid season continues, while the anonymous Gakpo had just one touch in Chelsea‘s penalty area.
