“Questions for upstairs”: Peter Crouch expects FSG to consider Arne Slot “direction”

The pressure is firmly on Arne Slot and, despite noises from FSG suggesting his future is safe, there is growing sentiment that this will now be reconsidered.

Slot’s status as Liverpool head coach appears to be as vulnerable as ever.

Boos rained down at the final whistle against Chelsea, with the Kop also voicing its concern mid-match at the withdrawal of Rio Ngumoha.

Such public displays are leading many to believe change is now not only ripe, but a formality.

Speaking following the lacklustre 1-1 draw at Anfield, ex-Liverpool striker Peter Crouch admitted he believes FSG will revisit the topic of whether to cut Slot loose.

“The fans are very knowledgable in this stadium and I think they know, ‘is this the direction that we want to go?’,” said Crouch on TNT Sports.

“And I think in the summer that’s where certain conversations have to be had.

“Do we double down and back Arne Slot, or is this the direction we want to go? That’s obviously the questions for upstairs.”

Chelsea had lost six consecutive matches before arriving at Anfield, yet were able to look a greatly improved side. It mirrored that of Tottenham in March, who were on a five-match losing streak before being able to secure a point at the expense of Liverpool.

The famous stadium, renowned for giving away all but nothing during the Jurgen Klopp era, has now become a soft touch and a place where Liverpool appear vulnerable and tepid in their intentions.

Crouch believes the difference between the former regime under Klopp and the current malaise with Slot is now telling.

He added: “I think there is an element of [the manager losing the fans].

“Sometimes I think because it was so good under Jurgen Klopp, you have to park that. He was a one-off, the style of football was so exciting, so attacking, it’s very difficult to live up to that.

“Unfortunately I think the style of play and some of the recruitment, have they been up to the levels? Certainly not of previous seasons, no. I think that’s disappointing the fans.”

Liverpool owners FSG have form for big decisions

Fenway Sports Group owner John W. Henry and his entourage are understood to be set on remaining with Slot and allowing the manager to begin afresh next season, with a full and refreshed squad at his disposal.

However, when push comes to shove the hierarchy have shown they can be ruthless.

As well as Liverpool, FSG also famously preside over the Boston Red Sox baseball giants, with developments over in the States this season providing a fascinating insight into what can go down behind the scenes.

Last month a surprise sacking of boss Alex Cora and five of the coaching staff sent shockwaves through the US sports landscape, given Cora had held his position for nine years.

The Red Sox registered a record of 10 victories and 17 defeats for the season at the time of the dismissals, which was deemed enough for the axe to be swung.

This season Liverpool have already equalled their record for most defeats in a season (19), matching the team Rafael Benitez took over with in 2004/05.
