Sunderland battled to a goalless draw against Manchester United at the Stadium of Light.
Sunderland produced a much improved performance as they pushed Champions League qualifiers Manchester United all of the way in Saturday’s meeting at the Stadium of Light.
The Black Cats went into the game looking for a first win in just under a month after following defeats against Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa with last weekend’s 1-1 draw at already relegated Wolverhampton Wanderers. The size of the task lying in wait was obvious as the Red Devils arrived on Wearside fresh from securing a return to the Champions League by claiming wins against Chelsea, Brentford and Liverpool over the last fortnight.
However, Sunderland became the first side to shut out the Red Devils during Michael Carrick’s interim reign as they battled their way to a goalless draw in front of over 47,000 supporters at the Stadium of Light. It could and perhaps should have been even better for Regis Le Bris’ side as the likes of Chemsdine Talbi, Noah Sadiki, Lutsharel Geertruida and Brian Brobbey all going close to finding a decisive goal.
The result has arguably ended Sunderland’s hopes of securing a place in European competition next season - but where could they finish in the Premier League table when the campaign comes to an end later this month? We take a look at the latest predicted final Premier League table produced by the stats experts at Opta.
