Revealed–Premier League clubs will need to pay£73m to complete signing of world-class midfielder

Arsenal, Chelsea, and Liverpool keeping tabs on Victor Froholdt

Chelsea, Arsenal, and Liverpool are leading a growing pack of Premier League clubs tracking FC Porto midfielder Victor Froholdt ahead of the 2026 summer window. Portuguese outlets Correio da Manhã and A Bola, backed by reports from the Danish site Bold, have named Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Newcastle as the main sides watching the 20-year-old Dane.

Scouts from Arsenal, Chelsea, and Newcastle were all recently spotted at Porto’s title-winning match. While Liverpool didn’t have anyone at that specific game, the club are said to be keeping a very close eye on Froholdt’s progress.

Froholdt moved from FC Copenhagen to Porto on July 23, 2025. He signed a deal through June 2030 in a move worth €20 million plus €2 million in bonuses, which also gave Copenhagen a 10% sell-on fee. His debut season in Portugal was a hit, racking up eight goals and six assists in 49 games while lifting the Liga Portugal trophy under manager Francesco Farioli.

Porto’s leadership, headed by André Villas-Boas, is keen to keep their core squad together for the 2026-27 season to defend their title and tackle the Champions League. Froholdt has even said publicly that he feels at home and would love to stay for a Champions League run.

With a £73m release clause protecting him, Porto feel confident that only a club willing to pay crazy money could actually lure him away. Froholdt can play as a deep-lying or box-to-box midfielder, offering both height and skill. However, his lack of top-tier European experience and Denmark’s failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup might slow the hype around his transfer for now.

So, which of the three clubs actually makes the most sense for Froholdt this summer?

Chelsea’s interest seems to hinge on whether Enzo Fernández stays or goes, making their interest feel more like a backup plan than a primary target, which is not exactly the best reason to spend £73m. Arsenal’s interest feels more logical. Froholdt offers the exact profile they’re looking for, providing reliable cover behind Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi, especially since Christian Norgaard hasn’t fully settled.

Liverpool, however, probably have the most pressing need. Their midfield looks thin if Curtis Jones or Alexis Mac Allister moves on, and Froholdt’s work rate makes him a great option for Arne Slot’s high-pressing style. While Chelsea’s interest is based on what-ifs and Arsenal’s is tactical, Liverpool’s need is real, and that desperation might be what finally forces FSG to make Porto an offer they can’t turn down.
