Carr had an underwhelming career with the Saints. He signed with the team in 2023 and went 14-13 in his two seasons. This doesn’t seem bad on the surface, but he never met expectations and couldn’t lead the team to the playoffs.
Then, after suffering a serious shoulder injury in 2025, he hung up the cleats and officially retired. This news surprised the national media and put the Saints in dangerous territory ahead of the season. Despite this, the team had a late-season turnaround and is projected as a possible playoff contender in 2026.

It shaped their offseason and allowed them to navigate to a goal, instead of partaking in a full rebuild.
Overall, the Derek Carr era in New Orleans will always be viewed with disdain among fans. However, his retirement has opened the door for Tyler Shough and guided them through this offseason. Now, they are in a position where they can compete for a playoff spot.
