Don't Worry, NFL Fans: A Full Move Into Streaming Probably Isn't Happening

The NFL continues to spread money around.

The league has long had massive broadcasting deals with ABC/ESPN, FOX, NBC and CBS. However, in recent years, the league has expanded its media presence. There are deals with Netflix, Peacock, Amazon Prime and YouTube TV, among others.

Many fans have worried that eventually, the league is going to go all-in with streaming. The movie and TV show industry has certainly been trending that way. There's been talk of a Super Bowl landing on a streaming platform, too.

But, according to Business Insider media reporter Peter Kafka, who appeared on a recent episode of John Ourand's The Varsity podcast, the NFL isn't likely to go all-in on streaming anytime soon.

It would cost too much money.

The NFL isn't moving away from cable

The NFL isn't going to move away from linear TV, unless something crazy happens.

"I still think they would be uneasy about that from just a pure commercial reach, and I think politically it is too much of a tripwire for them to touch. What would have to happen is an Apple or a Netflix would have to offer a astronomical number for them to make it worth their while to get into what surely would be a political fight."

There probably is going to be some changes to the NFL's media setup moving forward. However, for now, the league is sticking with its network partners, while splicing in some streaming deals.
