Liverpool have still not made a “direct approach” to Xabi Alonso or his representatives, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano made it clear that the Reds are maintaining the position that current head coach Arne Slot will be in charge next season:

“At the moment, the feeling at Liverpool, I can confirm that it is absolutely in the direction that they want to continue with Slot. Why? Because so far, and it’s May now, it’s no longer February, March, or April.”

“In May, Liverpool have not made contact with any other manager. There were many rumours on Liverpool making contact with Alonso coming from Germany, but I can guarantee that Liverpool this year never made any direct approach with Alonso or with his agents.”

Liverpool could lose out on Alonso

With Slot’s future under scrutiny, there are many who would like to see the Spaniard take up the reins next season. However, he is now reportedly in talks with another club.

Saturday’s opponents, Chelsea, are said to have held discussions with Alonso about taking up the post at Stamford Bridge at the end of the season.

Of course, the 44-year-old would undoubtedly choose a return to Anfield if it was offered to him, but it appears, as things stand, Slot is set to stay.

The pressure on Slot is mounting

The boos after the 1-1 draw against Chelsea on Saturday were not a surprise. It was a poor performance, and the fans were well within their rights to express their frustration.

Slot admits he may not be able to win the supporters back this campaign, and he seems to believe a squad revamp is the only way for things to change.

However, many are questioning whether the Dutchman should be given the chance to put things right during the summer transfer window.
