Mark Lawrenson has warned Arne Slot he will be “in trouble” if Liverpool gets off to a poor start next season.
The pressure is rising on the Reds’ head coach after yet another poor result at the weekend, having been held to a 1-1 draw by Chelsea at Anfield. Liverpool has now dropped 19 points at home this season as the wait goes on for Champions League qualification.
Slot’s side could still be caught by Bournemouth and Brighton, with three points needed over the final two games to guarantee a top-five finish - although that wouldn’t gloss over what has been a dismal season.

Speculation continues over Slot’s future, with fresh rumors suggesting that Xabi Alonso could be viewed as a replacement this summer, while Andoni Iraola has also been linked.
For now, Liverpool is understood to be sticking by Slot, although patience looks to be wearing thin among the club’s supporters. The Dutchman was booed on Saturday after his decision to substitute Rio Ngumoha during the second half against Chelsea.
Reds legend Lawrenson was at Anfield to witness that, and the former defender believes Slot will have to answer his critics quickly next season.

“I was at the game and it was very unusual for anybody in that crowd to boo,” Lawrenson told talkSPORT.
“Rio had a knock and he wasn't ready to go back on, so he took him off so it was understandable. The fans are just not sure in which direction this football club is going.
“If you watch a lot of teams in the Premier League, they are in your face from the first minute and Liverpool just isn't the same. Supporters are asking why we can't play like that, like Jurgen Klopp did, but Slot has a different way and that is the difference.
“Liverpool is not a firing club but if the season starts slowly next season, and Slot doesn't get the players in he wants, he will be in trouble.

“Liverpool is going to have to spend a lot of money again. There is only going to be one left back, and he wants to play on the wing. There are four right backs who are all injured plus Salah going. It is as big of a job as it was a year ago.
“Alisson looks as though he might want to leave and there might be one or two more. It is going to be a massive summer.”
Liverpool heads to Aston Villa next on Friday, knowing that a win against the Europa League finalist will finally secure Champions League qualification.

Any more dropped points though could set up a nervy final game against Brentford, with all 20 teams playing at the same time on the last day of the season.
