Packers donate to Green Bay school food pantry, call on businesses to support others

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - The Green Bay Packers are making a donation to Eisenhower Elementary School’s food pantry to keep it running through next school year.

The team is calling on other businesses to support the Green Bay Area Public School District’s other pantries. The school district has about a dozen pantries that could use extra funding.

The Packers donated $5,000 to Eisenhower Elementary’s food pantry for its families. The team also bought refrigerators for Eisenhower and Beaumont elementary schools.

Eisenhower’s social worker said the $5,000 donation is expected to fund the pantry throughout next school year. The pantry has only been open since February, giving once-a-month distributions to serve about 300 people, which includes students and their family members.

The social worker saw a need among the families and started the pantry. It has been relying on food donations from the community and local churches.

“I think everyone walks into a grocery store and sees a price and you get anxiety about the price of food,” said Cierra Collar, a social worker with the Green Bay Area Public School District. “I think for my families here knowing that they can stretch their pantries a little bit further to make sure their kiddos’ bellies are full when they come to school, we know that a child learns the best when their stomach is full of good food.”

The cost of maintaining a food pantry ranges from $5,000 to $15,000, depending on where it’s located and what the school families’ needs are.

The Packers said having access to nutritious food plays a key role in students’ learning.

“If we can help and assist with some of those barriers for them to be successful in a school day that we do that,” said Amanda Wery, community outreach manager for the Green Bay Packers. “Being able to provide some fuel for learning which leads to better sleep and then more attention in class and success in class.”

Meijer has also stepped up to sponsor one of the pantries, but the goal is to make sure the rest of the pantries are adopted by local businesses.

Business owners who would like to help one of the pantries can contact the school district by reaching out to Amy Fish at (920) 272-7657 or emailing her at [acfish@gbaps.org](mailto:acfish@gbaps.org).
