Fabrizio Romano has provided his latest update on Xabi Alonso and Liverpool amid plenty of noise surrounding Arne Slot.
It has been a season of mounting frustration at Anfield. Liverpool arrived at Saturday’s home fixture against Chelsea carrying the weight of a title defence gone badly wrong – a campaign in which the defending Premier League champions have spent close to £450 million in the transfer market, only to find themselves fighting for a top-four finish rather than silverware.

The mood inside the ground was already fragile, and it did not improve.
Arne Slot faced the cameras afterwards and was asked the uncomfortable questions his position increasingly demands. Had he lost the confidence of his own fans? Could he still turn this around?
The Dutch manager remained measured but candid – acknowledging the crowd’s frustration while insisting the performances did not always tell the full story. “Not this season, by the way,” he said bluntly when pressed on whether he could win the supporters back, before adding that a productive summer transfer window would make Liverpool “a completely different team” in 2026/27.
And according to Fabrizio Romano, Slot will be the man to lead the team in 2026/27 and not Xabi Alonso.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, the Italian transfer guru played down Xabi Alonso’s chances of becoming the new Liverpool boss – even going as far as to ‘guarantee’ that the Reds have not even contacted the Spaniard this year:
“At the moment, the feeling at Liverpool, I can confirm that it is absolutely in the direction that they want to continue with Slot. Why?”
“Because so far, and it’s May now, it’s no longer February, March, or April. In May, Liverpool have not made contact with any other manager.”
“There were many rumours on Liverpool making contact with Alonso coming from Germany, but I can guarantee that Liverpool this year never made any direct approach with Alonso or with his agents.”
