Liverpool’s season has raised some big questions lately, but the club seems calm about the future of Arne Slot. Now, Fabrizio Romano has given a clear update on the situation on talks around Xabi Alonso as well.
Fabrizio Romano gives on Arne Slot & Xabi Alonso
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has offered a big message about Liverpool’s stance for the new season. He is insisting that the club plans to continue with Arne Slot despite growing talks around possible changes.
As per Romano, ***“At the moment, the feeling at Liverpool, I can confirm, is that it is absolutely in the direction that they want to continue with Slot.***” In addition, he also talked about the rumours linking the club with former Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso as well. He made it clear that contact has not taken place.
He added, “There were many rumours on Liverpool making contact with Alonso coming from Germany, but I can guarantee that Liverpool this year never made any direct approach with Alonso or with his agents.”
Club owners have a clear stance on this situation
The Reds’ ownership group, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), is said to be looking at the full season rather than making a call on some particular results. The team has struggled for rhythm this season for sure. They fell out of the title race and exited cup competitions early as well. However, they are sitting fourth in the Premier League with 59 points from 36 matches.
That position keeps them in the race for Champions League qualification. Now, that remains the only target for them this campaign. While frustration from fans makes sense, the numbers show a side still competing at a high level.
Liverpool’s 2025/26 season so far,as per Transfermarkt:
Competition Matches Wins Draws Losses
Premier League 36 17 8 11
UCL 12 7 0 5
FA Cup 4 3 0 1
EFL Cup 2 1 0 1
Community Shield 1 0 0 1
Liverpool’s PL Form (last 5 games): W W W L D
Poor season form increases pressure on FSG
Even with Romano’s update, performances have not met the expectations. The Reds’ dip in form has included heavy defeat runs earlier in the campaign. In addition, consistency has been difficult to find.
Compared to rivals, the gap to the top two remains clear. Arsenal lead the table, while Manchester City follow closely. They have already secured UCL places. Meanwhile, Slot’s side sit behind them at fourth and must finish strongly for Champions League football next season.
The Merseyside club’s form has also affected the mood of the fans. This comes especially after recent results against Chelsea at Anfield. This season tells how much the team relies on balanced contributions across the field, rather than individual form alone.
That said, the club now faces a choice between patience and pressure. Romano’s comments suggest patience is the priority for now. If they cement the UCL spot, the Dutch manager is very likely to stay for the new season. If the form dips further, changes will be certain.
For now, the talks around Xabi Alonso have cooled. With that, the club signals full support for Slot heading into the next season. In a league as competitive as the PL, club stability can sometimes be the most important decision of all. That is especially when there is rebuilding for a stronger future at Anfield.
