£60m new signing has played his last game before he arrives at Liverpool in July

Liverpool are close to finally welcoming new centre-back signing Jeremy Jacquet after the Frenchman officially played his last game for Rennes.

The 20-year-old said his goodbyes to the Rennes faithful with a final game for the club against Paris FC. For those unfamiliar with Ligue 1, this is not the same team as PSG.

Rennes beat Paris FC 2-1 on Sunday, securing a fifth-place finish in the French first division, before the end-of-season formalities, which saw Jacquet honoured before he completes his move to Liverpool.

Liverpool reached an agreement with Rennes for a £60m transfer which will see Jacquet officially join the Reds in July. The World Cup will dominate headlines this summer, but Jacquet’s arrival on Merseyside is one that has gone under the radar, given the Merseyside club’s difficulties this season.

After full time, Jacquet was presented with a commemorative print to celebrate the seven years he spent at Rennes ahead of his official move to Liverpool.

Speaking after leaving the Roazhon Park pitch for the last time as a Rennes player, Jacquet spoke to the press, saying: “This qualification in Europe, it relieves me because I wasn’t able to help my teammates during this end of the season.”

Jacquet suffered a serious shoulder injury in February which required surgery. The operation was successful, but as a result, the 20-year-old has not played another game this season.

While Liverpool agreed a £60m deal to sign Jacquet in January, they really could have used his defensive talents this season amid a season characterised by weak defending and a lack of desire.

Ahead of his move to Liverpool, the defender says he has been putting in the work to do his homework on the Reds.

When asked if he’s had time to see what Liverpool are like as a club and team, he said: “Yeah, I’ve got time for that. I’ve already started, but I have time.”

Liverpool’s long-term defensive future is looking bright, with Giovanni Leoni and Jacquet set to become the Reds’ centre-back pairing when the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate move on.

Leoni has also suffered this season, spending most of the season on the sidelines as a result of an ACL tear.
