Steelers Make Roster Moves, Sign Center Out Of Rookie Minicamp

The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed center Greg Crippen to the offseason roster, the team announced today. Crippen tried out for the team during this past weekend’s minicamp, evidently doing enough to earn a contract.

In a corresponding move, the Steelers waived OL Sataoa Laumea.

Crippen was one of 12 tryout players invited to minicamp over the weekend. Those players are not brought in under contracts, but they have the chance to earn one should they perform well enough. Crippen must have caught the eye of the coaching staff, mostly head offensive line coach James Campen and assistant Jahri Evans, to stick.

Undrafted out of Michigan, Crippen started at center for the last 1.5 seasons for the Wolverines. Initially tabbed to replace Drake Nugent to begin the 2024 season, he lost the starting role but was inserted into the lineup midway through the year. Crippen started for all of the 2025 season and finished his career with 21 starts. He was part of Michigan’s 2023 national title-winning team. Recently, GM Omar Khan noted the team likes to add players who have won college championships.

At his Pro Day, Crippen weighed in at 6031, 301 pounds with 31 3/8-inch arms. He ran a 5.44 40-yard dash (1.75 ten split) with a 28-inch vertical and 8’8″ broad.

On tape, he’s regarded as a better zone than power/gap blocker.

Crippen will fight to stick on the roster the rest of the summer and capture a practice squad spot. He may function as a No. 3 or No. 4 center behind Zach Frazier, Brock Hoffman, and Ryan McCollum. Hoffman is expected to see reps at guard and battle for the left guard vacancy, which could open up the door for Crippen to work third-team center this summer.

Laumea signed a Reserve/Futures contract with the team in January. He was not eligible to participate in the team’s rookie minicamp.

So far, the team hasn’t announced any other additions. The Steelers still have just one punter on the offseason roster, Cameron Johnston. Three punters tried out for the team during rookie minicamp: Devin Bale, Gabriel Nowsu, and Ryan Stonehouse.

Pittsburgh will begin its voluntary OTAs on May 18.
