Prospects are discussed almost exclusively through their skillsets leading up to the NFL Draft, but the team that picks the prospects have a huge impact on them. For Jordyn Tyson, the New Orleans Saints is a great situation for him. NFL analyst Tom Blair thinks being in New Orleans puts Tyson in prime position for a breakout rookie campaign.
Blair took a look at the 10 rookies in the best position to succeed both as a rookie and long term. Tyson came in fourth on the list. Blair acknowledged Tyson's clear talent. It's not just talent, however. As we mentioned, it's now player plus team that determines their outlook.
"Of all the receivers drafted in Round 1, Tyson is in perhaps the best overall situation," Blair wrote. When you look at ecosystem around Tyson, it's an easy argument to make. The Saints have all the factors you'd want for developing a young receiver.
Saints are built for Jordyn Tyson to explode as a rookie
There’s three pieces surrounding Tyson that’ll help maximize his rookie season: Kellen Moore, Chris Olave and Tyler Shough. Some rookie receivers get drafted into questionable offensive situations. The right coach and quarterback are the two biggest factors that can impact the direction of a young receiver’s career. Tyson is in good hands in both of these aspects.
We’ve watched many receivers suffer at the hands of the wrong quarterback, and that isn't exclusive to young receivers. Some players are able to produce in spite of who’s throwing them the ball. DeAndre Hopkins is a great example of this. You don’t want your receiver to have to do this, though. As long as last wasn't a fluke for Shough, Tyson will have a quarterback with good vision, timing and ball placement throwing him the ball.
Moore got the job because of his ability to draw up offenses. Players like Tyson make the job fun. While Tyson can create for himself, Moore will ensure he doesn't have to. He'll use Tyson's strengths to the team's advantage. Moore is already working on moving Tyson around at rookie minicamp, so it's safe to say defenses will get an assortment of looks from Tyson.
Calling Chris Olave the cherry on top downplays his impact on Tyson. Having another quality weapon on the other side takes pressure off Tyson. He doesn’t have to come in and be the best receiver on the team. Tyson doesn’t have to face the top corner for most of the game or see many double teams, if any. Defenses will be concerned about Olave and that gives Tyson a level of freedom many receivers drafted that early aren’t afforded.
You put a receiver drafted in the top-10 with the combination of an All-Pro receiver to command attention, an offensive minded head coach and a young quarterback who’s shown potential to be a franchise quarterback and you have the recipe for success. The ball is in Tyson’s court to show why he was regarded as the best receiver in the league by many.
