Florida State football didn't have a productive 2025 campaign, where they finished with a 5-7 record. The only bright side was beating Alabama at home in the opener. The Seminoles stood on the business that former quarterback Thomas Castellanos said in the offseason about Alabama not being anything without the legendary Nick Saban.
The 31-17 victory was surprising to most, especially with the physicality that the squad showed against an SEC opponent that built its identity from overwhelming teams. Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer had no answers for the Seminoles.
The offense was very productive that day, getting everything it wanted. One of the plays that set the tone of the day was the 40-yard pass from Thomas Castellanos to wide receiver Squirrel White on third down and long to set up the Seminoles' first touchdown of the day, which was massive.
The Alabama catch was legendary for wide receiver Squirrel White
White had his moment of greatness during the catch. The former Tennessee transfer had to go full extension to ensure that he caught it. It was a perfect throw by Castellanos, but an even better effort by White.
Unfortunately, the veteran didn't do anything the rest of the season, finishing with 5 receptions for 52 yards and 0 touchdowns (according to ESPN Stats and Information). The thought process before the 2025 campaign began was that White could be a number two option behind Duce Robinson.
He dealt with injuries throughout his college career, including during his time at Florida State. Then there were times when he actually was open on the field, and the football wasn't thrown his way.
As a senior, White declared for the 2026 NFL Draft and was picked up by the Chicago Bears with an undrafted free agent deal. This was expected, given the lack of productivity. It was announced on Monday afternoon that he will be retiring from the NFL.

Health likely played a huge factor in his decision to retire from the NFL without truly even getting started. To be honest, I hope for the best for White because he is a talented player who showed flashes at Tennessee when healthy. Nonetheless, I hope that he finds a suitable environment for himself outside of football for him to flourish in.
