We all know what a struggle it has been for Liverpool in the Premier League this season, as their title defense has long fallen by the wayside following a brutal run of form over the winter.
The poor form was only compounded by a seemingly endless list of fitness issues throughout the squad, in-fighting between players and manager, and poor tactics from Arne Slot himself. All told, there are several reasons for why the Reds have lost an astounding eleven times in the league this campaign.
The new arrivals have not quite made the instant impact the money spent on them would have warranted, while the proven leaders have also dropped their levels.
While there are several different stats one could peruse through to see just how difficult the season has been for Liverpool, there is one that is going to be hard for fans and coaches alike to stomach.
Closer to Bournemouth, Brighton and Brentford
Despite now sitting in fourth place in the Premier League, the Reds are sitting a rough twenty points behind league leaders Arsenal with two games remaining in the season.
The Gunner are on 79 points following their controversial win over West Ham, while we see Liverpool battling with 59 of their own. In addition to the points gap, Slot's side have conceded 48 goals, which is 22 more than Arsenal, during this league campaign.
The heir of inevitability and dominance is completely gone from Anfield. They currently stand only four points above Bournemouth, six above Brighton and they are eight clear of Brentford in 8th.
No disrespect to those clubs who have carved out nice livings in the Premier League's top half, it's not where anyone expected the Reds to be after spending over £450 million last summer. It's just not.
At this same stage a year ago, it was a parade to officially lifting the trophy as Liverpool were sitting on 83 points, a full 15 points clear of Arsenal in second.
A 35-point swing in the table is an almost unheard of change year-over-year, especially for a club like Liverpool, who are one of the biggest names in the sport. These numbers outline just how much ground has been lost this season and what is left to do.
2024/25 Premier League Points (Through 36 matches) 2025/26 Premier League Points (Through 36 matches)
Liverpool - 83 pts Liverpool - 59 pts
Arsenal - 68 pts Arsenal - 79 pts
Brentford - 55 pts Brentford - 51 pts
Bournemouth - 53 pts Bournemouth - 55 pts
Brighton - 55 pts Brighton - 53 pts
Clubs like Brighton, Brentford and Bournemouth have largely stabilized and held their standing from a season ago. They have not raised their level to unheard of heights, as it's the Reds that have dropped down to their neck of the woods, which makes this all the more concerning.
What's left for Liverpool this season?
In a perfect world, we'll see two victories to finish off this debacle of a season and end on a soulless 65 points for the 2025/26 season.
In that perfect world, we'd still see a 19-point reduction in output from the reigning league winners after spending a record amount of money in the summer transfer window. It's things like that where we see jobs in jeopardy at places like Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Chelsea.
As it were, it appears that Arne Slot is likely safe for at least one more season. However, he is on the thinnest ice of any coach going into the new season.
Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson will want to end their historic tenures at the club with some wins, so hopefully they can get fit and fire off some good results to end this term.
Matches against fellow Champions League chasing Aston Villa and new table-mates Brentford await for Slot and his men to end things. Based on the irregular form we have seen from Liverpool in the Premier League this season, their final points tally could be one of several outcomes.
The numbers don't lie, for the 2025/26 season, defending league champion Liverpool are more on par with Bournemouth, Brighton and Brentford and are miles behind the Arsenal project. Rough, indeed.
