Reports in Spain say Barcelona will increase their efforts to pursue a deal for Chelsea forward Joao Pedro in the coming weeks. The 24-year-old Brazilian has emerged as the Catalan giants’ prime alternative if their pursuit of Atletico Madrid star Julian Alvarez does not bear fruit this summer.
Pedro has been one of the few bright sparks in a turbulent season at Stamford Bridge, netting 20 goals and providing nine assists in all competitions in his debut season. His performances have caught the eye of Barcelona boss Hansi Flick, who is said to see the forward as the perfect profile to freshen up his attack and eventually succeed veteran talisman Robert Lewandowski at the Spotify Camp Nou.
The former Brighton striker is expected to cost between £68million and £85million for Barcelona, a bargain compared to Alvarez, whose price has shot up over €120million. Sporting director Deco has been keeping an eye on the youngster since his south coast days, and it is claimed that informal discussions have taken place between the Brazilian and his international team-mate Raphinha about life under Flick.
But Chelsea are believed to be adamant they want to keep the player, whom they see as part of their long-term project, having only signed him last summer.
Julian Alvarez Now Linked To PSG Switch
Meanwhile, Barcelona’s preferred target Julian Alvarez has been heavily linked with a sensational move to Paris Saint-Germain in recent days. According to reports, the Argentine striker’s people are pushing hard for a summer departure from Atletico Madrid, with his agent and family reportedly wanting a new challenge.
PSG boss Luis Enrique has long been an admirer of the World Cup winner and tried to sign him when he left Manchester City for the Spanish capital. The Ligue 1 champions are said to be working on concrete plans to lure the 26-year-old to the Parc des Princes, with the potential departures of Goncalo Ramos and Lee Kang-in leaving space in their attacking ranks.
However, Atletico Madrid regard Alvarez as untouchable and have put a huge price on his services. Barcelona are expected to step up their interest in Joao Pedro as the summer transfer window approaches, with PSG circling and the Colchoneros’ demands proving prohibitive.
