‘I haven't played’ - Man City ace gives Newcastle United £40m come-and-get-me plea

Newcastle United maintain an arm’s length interest in James Trafford after failing to sign the goalkeeper last summer.

James Trafford has once again admitted to being disappointed at his lack of Manchester City game time.

Newcastle United were on the brink of signing the England international for around £30million last summer. Terms were agreed until City activated a buy-back option at the final hour.

Trafford started the campaign between the sticks for Pep Guardiola but a costly mistake against Tottenham Hotspur caused panic. Man City moved for world-class goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and, since then, his opportunities have been limited to cup competitions.

What James Trafford said in February

After keeping a clean sheet in a 2-0 FA Cup win over Salford City, Trafford publicly aired his frustrations at a lack of game time. He said: "It has obviously been very up and down throughout the season because I haven't played too much and obviously I had a decision to make in the summer.

"Everyone always thinks when you make decisions (for) the best possible outcome and obviously it hasn't been the best possible outcome, but I have just tried to improve every day, stay positive (and) happy. Throughout the year it has been such a big learning experience.

“So the main thing I didn't want is for it to impact your general happiness and your general feeling. I have had to learn a lot throughout the year and I have just tried to work as hard as I can and try and improve and win the day."

James Trafford fresh comments

Speaking to Man City’s official media channel, Trafford opened up about the difficulties he has faced this season. It is understood that Newcastle are keeping tabs on his situation, although wages could be a problem.

"Just enjoy it,” Trafford said. “Even linking to this season, one of the things I have found hard because I haven't played, as in playing games as much as I have wanted to.

"The whole thing, for me, is just enjoying playing and trying as hard as you can to win. I am playing well, it has been really good fun. It feels lovely, I really enjoy playing and whenever I do play I try and really enjoy myself."
