Newcastle United have added Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara to their “shortlist” of summer transfer targets, according to reports in French media.

L’Equipe claim that the 22-year-old could be on the move at the end of the season, just two years after leaving Metz for the south of France.

Camara was signed for a fee in the region of €15m, but it is believed that he will be on the market for around double that amount now.

Even so, €30m (£26m) is not a massive sum for a player of the Senegal international’s calibre, so it is not a surprise that the Magpies are sniffing around.

Why is the club targeting Camara?

There has been a distinct lack of energy in the middle of the park this campaign, and when captain Bruno Guimaraes has been absent, the issue has been particularly noticeable.

Furthermore, there is uncertainty over the future of Sandro Tonali. It is believed the club are keen on keeping the Italian international.

However, his agent Giuseppe Riso appears to have other ideas based on his comments in recent months. The likes of Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United have all been credited with an interest in Tonali.

Newcastle will face competition for the player

L’Equipe report that Liverpool are circling two of Monaco’s players, Camara and teammate Maghnes Akliouche.

At the moment, the Reds are only keeping tabs on Camara, with Akliouche seemingly the more likely target. The Merseysiders are set to lose Mo Salah this summer so strengthening their options out wide will take priority over reinforcing the midfield.

Even so, Camara’s availability for pretty low price may also attract other suitors, unless sporting director Ross Wilson moves fast to secure his services.
