With injuries decimating the team in attacking areas, the most notable tactical shift when Chelsea played Liverpool at the weekend was the use of Marc Cucurella.. He looked like he was lining up as a wing back, but effectively played as a full left winger.
He was the most effective Chelsea player in attack, constantly threatening the defence with his runs.
His manager Calum McFarlane praised him after the game, and on the London is Blue podcast they did the same thing this morning.
Cucurella praised for intelligent showing against Liverpool
“I’m serious. He’s our best winger. Marc Cucurella has more intelligence, more know how, more understanding, works harder, makes runs [than the other options],” presenter Nick Verlaney said.
If we would have had Marc Cucurella playing left wing all season, we’d have 15 more points. It opened my eyes to how bad our wing play has been all season. He looked awesome today.”
