Liverpool are among the leading contenders to complete the signing of West Ham legend Jarrod Bowen this summer, according to journalist Matt Barlow.
Bowen has been an incredible servant for the Hammers, captaining them and so often proving to be their attacking talisman down the years.
West Ham are now in danger of being relegated from the Premier League to the Championship this month, however, which would almost certainly see the 29-year-old move on to pastures new.
Liverpool have often been linked with a move for Bowen, even going back to the Jurgen Klopp era, and now a fresh update has emerged regarding their pursuit of him.
According to The Daily Mail‘s Barlow, the Reds are “strong contenders” to snap up the England international at the end of the season, especially if the Hammers go down. There is hope that he would cost less than £60m.
Liverpool are described as “long-standing admirers” of the winger as they look to find a replacement for Mohamed Salah this summer, with Newcastle and Everton also believed to be in the mix.
Jarrod Bowen a great option, but only as a squad player
Bowen could be a Xherdan Shaqiri-esque signing for Liverpool, with the Swiss such an effective signing when he joined after Stoke City were relegated in 2018.
The West Ham icon arguably isn’t quite at his absolute peak now, turning 30 later this year, but he has so much quality, with Jamie Carragher once calling him “one of the greatest players” to have ever played for the club”, when referring to the Hammers.
Bowen could be a brilliant squad player for Liverpool, providing strong end product and a great team ethic, but if he does join, it shouldn’t be as a key starter every week.
The Reds need to be signing a younger and more elite winger in the summer transfer window, such as RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande, but Bowen could be a difference-maker from the substitutes’ bench.
It is certainly a piece of transfer business that feels possible, especially if Bowen suffers relegation, and assuming his price tag isn’t too hefty, he would be a shrewd addition for two or three years.
