There’s a claim in the Turkish media that Galatasaray have stepped up their pursuit of Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk.
The Netherlands international has been linked with a move to the Super Lig leaders in recent weeks. Sport Witness covered reports last month they were ready to match his Liverpool salary.
Cimbom were waiting for the ‘green light’ to make their move for the Dutchman. It now seems an approach has been made.
Liverpool transfer talks commence
Arda Özkurt has relayed to Haber Sarikirmizi that Galatasaray have begun to make efforts to sign Van Dijk.
The Turkish journalist says the Liverpool captain would be interested in a move to Istanbul. In March, it was said Van Dijk had been impressed with the atmosphere at Rams Park after Liverpool’s two visits this season.
Negotiations are expected to continue ahead of the summer. Gala are also hoping they will be able to sign the 34-year-old on a free transfer.
“Galatasaray has started attempts to add Virgil van Dijk to its squad. Van Dijk is also interested in wearing the Galatasaray jersey. If an agreement is reached, Van Dijk informed Galatasaray that he could leave Liverpool without a fee. Negotiations are ongoing,” said the Turkish reporter.
Last month it was reported Galatasaray were prepared to match his current Liverpool wage. With the low income tax for foreign players in the Super Lig, it’s hoped this can be achieved.
Gala are already looking to next season, with their manager Okan Buruk keen to strengthen his defence. Van Dijk would be seen as a possible replacement for either Davinson Sanchez or Abdülkerim Bardakcı.
Liverpool have decision to make
With just over 12 months left on his current deal, Liverpool may have a decision to make with the player this summer. However. it may be unlikely they’d allow the central defender to leave on a free.
Should the defender try to force that, then considerations may be made given his colossal salary.
Van Dijk has made 53 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring six gaols.
