Ibrahima’s Konate future at Liverpool has been one of the most talked-about sagas of the season, with the French defender’s contract ticking down and speculation swirling around his long-term commitment to the club.
After the Merseyside derby win, the Frenchman was upbeat about his chances of staying, saying:

“To be fair, there are many things people have said, but for a long time we have spoken with the club and we are [now] close to an agreement,” Konate explained. “I think everyone wished for that for as long as possible but we are in a good way.”
“For sure, there is a big chance I’m here next season. This is what I always wanted. I’m waiting to sort the contract.”
However, since then, there has been very little in the way of clarity. Things took a turn for the worse when David Ornstein reported that the Frenchman was still at an impasse with the club regarding a new deal this week.
While many Reds fans are of the opinion that Konate is to blame for the situation, reliable Italian journalist Matteo Moretto took to X to report that it’s Liverpool that are stalling the deal:
“The club is now the one that’s undecided about whether to renew the contract. The club is stalling; it’s not entirely convinced about renewing, under certain conditions… the outcome is still up in the air, but there are doubts.”
The takeaway is that this is no longer the straightforward rubber‑stamping exercise it first appeared to be. Instead, the club is clearly weighing up its options, perhaps in light of fitness concerns, tactical plans under Arne Slot, or simple financial prudence.
