Chelsea have identified one other leading managerial target alongside Xabi Alonso

Chelsea are reportedly engaging in strong talks with Xabi Alonso about becoming their new manager, but are also keeping a close eye on Cesc Fabregas ahead of making a final decision.

Alonso has been involved in positive talks with the Blues over the vacancy at Stamford Bridge, left by Liam Rosenior after he was sacked in April.

Chelsea showed they can play in Alonso’s favoured formation during the draw against Liverpool, getting the best out of key stars Moises Caicedo and Marc Cucurella in the process.

Cesc Fabregas is Chelsea’s main candidate outside of Xabi Alonso

The Blues want to have a new manager in place before the World Cup, meaning they will likely move away from Alonso if they do not get assurances he will take over.

This would leave them looking around at other candidates, including Como manager Cesc Fabregas to take over.

In fact, according to Flashscore, Fabregas is actually the other leading candidate to become the new manager in West London.

Glen Johnson believes Fabregas would command respect from the Chelsea players, a quality which Rosenior did not have.

Chelsea players were openly ignoring Rosenior’s instructions in his final game in charge, which is a one-way road to things not working out.

Fabregas’ stance on Chelsea

John Terry has given his backing to Fabregas as one of the most promising coaches in football, and his relationship with Chelsea fans is obviously very good.

However, Fabregas has reservations about taking over at Stamford Bridge, with the club in a very different place to where it was when he was a player.

He is also in the middle of a very promising project with Como, confirming their qualification for European football for the very first time.

There will surely be a desire for him to continue that journey, potentially putting a move to the Premier League on the back burners,
