Liverpool striker changes international team to follow record-breaking father

Liverpool youngster Keyrol Figueroa has decided to commit to the Honduras national side, snubbing the USA for whom he represented at youth level.

While injury has disrupted the second half of his campaign, the season can be looked back upon with pride by Figueroa, who scored 12 goals in 15 under-21 league appearances.

His performances have led to him being sought after by the Honduran national team setup, and he has now committed his International future to his father’s nation.

Keyrol’s dad, Maynor Figueroa, is the country’s record cap holder with 181 Honduras appearances to his name, including six outings at the 2010 and 2014 World Cups.

It is no surprise, therefore, that Keyrol has decided to follow in his footsteps by switching from the USA Under-20s to Honduras.

In a video released by the Honduran Football Federation, Keyrol and Maynor visited Wigan’s stadium, where the latter played for more than four years.

Keyrol said: “I think the people who know me know that I never said no (to Honduras).

His father agreed, adding: “It’s just that you wanted to try something different.”

The 19-year-old went on to explain: “I can feel the excitement of it all.

“All my life, I have felt a sense of Honduran identity. I feel a sense of honour that comes with responsibility; it is all happening right before my eyes.

“This is a very important day for all of us, not just for me.”

The Honduran Football Federation were clearly thrilled by the decision, too, and shared a statement that read:

“Keyrol Figueroa joins the dream of an entire nation.

“With the conviction of someone who knows his roots, the forward has decided to wear the colours of the Honduras National Team. After a development process in international football, Keyrol chooses the path of the heart and commitment to the H.

“We embark on a new path, a new hope. With young talent and eyes set on the future, our national team strengthens for the challenges ahead.

“Keyrol: Welcome to your country, welcome home!”

While he isn’t expected to be involved in the starting XI immediately, well-placed academy source Lewis Bower believes “there’s a high chance Figueroa will be called up to the senior squad for a friendly against Argentina soon.”
