With pressure building on Arne Slot at Liverpool, there is more evidence that FSG has made its mind up on his future, but Jamie Carragher and fans alike know how big a risk that is

Whatever your thoughts on Arne Slot are right now, it does seem as though Liverpool has made its mind up on him.
The pressure that the Dutchman is facing from supporters cannot be ignored. The boos that greeted his decision to substitute Rio Ngumoha on Saturday, and then the discontent that greeted the full-time whistle, was yet more evidence of the growing unrest at Anfield.
It has been a season to forget for so many reasons, and it’s still not over yet. The prospect that the Reds could yet miss out on Champions League qualification is still very real, and even if it seems unlikely, that is a damning indictment for - let’s not forget - the reigning Premier League champions.

Still though, Liverpool is backing its head coach. Slot even feels confident enough to hint at the club’s plans for the summer transfer window, with the “100 percent” promise that fans will see a different side to his team next season.
Yet more evidence that he’s going nowhere came on Monday with the revelation that Chelsea is in talks with Xabi Alonso. If Liverpool really was planning a change, you wouldn’t expect the man who has long been touted to take over at Anfield - and who has admitted himself to dreaming of becoming the Reds’ manager one day - to be entertaining one of its biggest rivals.
All the signs point to Slot remaining in charge next season then. Still, you can’t shake the feeling that Liverpool might be heading down a very familiar road.

A Dutch manager facing major scrutiny having overseen a poor second year after winning so many plaudits during his first, but (potentially) being backed by his club with more signings in the summer. Where have we heard that before?
“I don’t even think it’s a 50/50 split now on Arne Slot, and I know people outside of the club can’t quite get their heads around that, thinking ‘this guy won the league, it looks like he’s going to get you Champions League football in his second season,’” Jamie Carragher commented on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football this week.
“But the drop-off has been so stark, and there’s been no improvement really from day one until the end of the season, in results or performances that you think ‘is it going to get any better?’

“My worry with Liverpool and Arne Slot a little bit is are we going to be in a situation where, a little bit like [Erik] Ten Hag, where he had a great first season, didn’t win the league, Slot won the league so that’s a completely different level, but the second season was really poor.
“Then you keep the manager on the back of what he did in his first season, and then it carries on poorly. Then you get into October and you think ‘we’ve got to change the manager’.
“I think that’s probably a little bit of a feeling with Liverpool supporters, but it looks from the things we’re hearing that Arne Slot’s going to be given another opportunity next season.”

You can’t shake the feeling that we’re approaching Ten Hag 2.0 here. I’m thinking it, Carragher’s thinking it, and plenty of other fans are on the same page.
FSG has gone to great lengths to make it clear that Slot is their man. They’re seemingly confident that he can turn things around, and avoid the same fate that befell Ten Hag at Manchester United.
There’s no doubt though that they’re taking a big risk, whether they back him with some more big signings this summer or not. Assuming Slot does stay in charge, the start of next season feels like it’s make or break for him.
