Liverpool will qualify for the Champions League this season but next year, the task for Arne Slot will be to challenge for the Premier League title again.

In order for that to be possible, Liverpool will need to spend more money in the transfer market and work hard on the training field too. A big summer awaits on both fronts.

Here is the Liverpool.com verdict on the transfer gossip to emerge around the Reds today. We start with a midfielder who has played in the Premier League this season, but who will be looking for a move when the season comes to a close.

Joao Gomes (Wolves)

Liverpool and Manchester United are both strong contenders to sign the Wolves and Brazil midfielder Joao Gomes this summer, according to Caught Offside.

The player has also been linked with a transfer move to Atletico Madrid and Crystal Palace. He is said to be valued at around $47 million (£35 million).

At Liverpool, there might be a need to replace someone like Curtis Jones, who will soon enter the final year of his contract at Anfield. Arne Slot also needs fresh energy and legs in the center of the field.

Gomes is Premier League proven and set to enter his prime years, with plenty calling for a more defensively-minded midfielder to come in at Liverpool to help out Ryan Gravenberch.

Liverpool.com says: Signing a midfielder may require someone to leave. Wataru Endo isn't really trusted as a starter and Alexis Mac Allister has not had a great season, so there are a couple of possible contenders.

Whether Gomes would be a target, though, remains to be seen. There could be a few relegated players to look at, with West Ham's Mateus Fernandes another one who won't be heading to the Championship.

Maghnes Akliouche (Monaco)

Liverpool could allow Cody Gakpo to leave this summer, a report from TeamTalk has claimed, with AS Monaco forward Maghnes Akliouche put forward by L'Equipe as someone that the Reds are eyeing ahead of the summer.

Without Luis Diaz for competition down the left flank, Gakpo has struggled for consistency this term for Liverpool. He only signed a new contract at Anfield last year, however.

Akliouche has scored six and assisted six in 30 league games for Monaco this season. The 24-year-old has made seven appearances for France to date.

Mainly playing off the right and drifting inside onto his stronger left foot, Akliouche could, on paper, come into the Liverpool team in place of Mohamed Salah, who will be departing.

Liverpool.com says: Adding more pace and goal threat from out wide will be crucial this summer, as will making sure that Alexander Isak gets the right service. Getting a couple of good wingers in could unleash Florian Wirtz too.
