Liverpool in pole position to sign 'wonderful' midfielder

Liverpool are reportedly in pole position to sign Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes this summer.

The Reds are eyeing another massive summer transfer window after spending £460m on new signings in 2025, with Jeremy Jacquet already confirmed as the first addition. The French centre-back was honoured after Rennes’ last Ligue 1 game of the season on Sunday, ahead of his move to Merseyside.

Fixing issues at right back, on the wings and in midfield are the priorities for sporting director Richard Hughes, who David Ornstein confirms will remain at the club this summer despite persistent links to the Saudi Pro League.

After last summer’s recruitment didn’t yield the desired results, Liverpool will need to get their transfers spot on this year.

Liverpool tipped to complete Gomes deal

According to a report from Caught Offside, Liverpool are the best placed to sign Gomez when Wolves are relegated. The Midlands club has already been relegated mathematically speaking, with just three wins from 36 Premier League games.

Despite this, Gomez, who is described as a ‘wonderful player‘ by Wolves boss Rob Edwards, has been a consistent performer, attracting interest from England’s biggest clubs.

Caught Offside report: “Atletico Madrid have already initiated contact, while Liverpool, Manchester United, and surprisingly Crystal Palace are monitoring developments closely.

“Initially, Wolves valued Gomes at around £60 million, but relegation has forced them to lower expectations. Current market dynamics suggest a fee in the region of €45–50 million is more realistic.

“While this represents a financial loss compared to their original valuation, it would provide a crucial injection of funds for a Championship-level budget.

“Liverpool admire his pressing ability and dynamism, with reports suggesting Gomes himself is open to a move to Anfield. The most likely scenario is that Gomes remains in the Premier League, with United or Liverpool leading the chase at around £40 million. Atletico Madrid remains a strong alternative, while a loan deal with an option to buy is considered unlikely.”

Liverpool have had a major imbalance in midfield this season despite the same personnel from the 2025 Premier League title triumph still operating in the engine room.

Alexis Mac Allister, in particular, has regressed this campaign, while Ryan Gravenberch is not as imperious as he was last season. Dominik Szoboszlai, however, has been Liverpool’s best player this season. The Hungarian has 13 goals and 10 assists in all competitions.
