Chelsea’s transfer priority with club ready to listen to Xabi Alonso’s input

Former Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso may not be out of work for much longer, with the Spaniard in talks to become the new Chelsea boss.

It is thought that Alonso has impressed Chelsea during discussions, and the Liverpool legend now appears to be the frontrunner to replace Liam Rosenior in the Stamford Bridge dugout.

Whether it is Alonso or another name, it looks like the new Chelsea manager will get a big say on transfers at the club.

Chelsea prioritising signing a ‘starting-level’ centre-back

Central defence has been a bit of an issue for Chelsea at times this season, but reinforcements could be on the way.

According to football.london, Chelsea are prioritising signing a “starting-level” centre-back this summer and want Alonso or whoever succeeds Rosenior to be involved in the club’s overall recruitment.

Levi Colwill and Wesley Fofana are likely to finish the season as the Blues’ centre-half pairing.

Colwill and Fofana shone in Chelsea’s 1-1 draw against Liverpool last Saturday, with the former making his first start this season after recovering from an ACL injury.

While sidelined, Colwill used his love of Lego to help him cope with being away from the football pitch.

The central defender Chelsea should sign

What Chelsea define as a “starting-level” centre-back is not quite clear, but you would imagine that someone like John Stones meets the criteria.

On a free transfer, he has to be considered!

Stones has made 293 appearances at Manchester City and has won six Premier League titles.

The 31-year-old is leaving City at the end of the season after his contract expires and could be a brilliant addition to Chelsea.

His injury record may be a bit of a concern, but on a free transfer, he really would be a low-risk, high-reward signing.

Stones is experienced, composed on the ball and good in the air. The England international is a complete defender, and there are not too many of those lying about on the market.
