The number of years Chelsea have had Xabi Alonso on their radar

Chelsea’s interest in former Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso does not appear to be new.

It is being widely reported that Chelsea are talking to Alonso about the possibility of taking charge at Stamford Bridge following Liam Rosenior’s dismissal.

The Blues are also thought to be considering the likes of Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola and Fulham’s Marco Silva.

However, Alonso seems to be the leading candidate for the vacant position at this moment in time.

Xabi Alonso or Cesc Fabregas… Who are you taking?👀

Alonso is likely to have a lot of supporters at Stamford Bridge. According to The Guardian, the Spaniard has actually been on Chelsea’s radar for at least three years.

The club would have been impressed with what they saw from him back in the 2023/24 season. During that campaign, Alonso led Leverkusen to the Bundesliga title without losing a single game.

They also reached the Europa League final but were beaten 3-0 by Atalanta, failing to contain Ademola Lookman that night as the forward went on to score a hat-trick.

The above takes nothing away from the incredible job that Alonso did at Leverkusen, a club once dubbed as “Neverkusen” for never winning anything.

If Chelsea are not careful, they could face the same level of mockery in the future. The Blues have to get their next managerial appointment right or risk more failure.
