Jamie Carragher has previously made it clear that management was never part of his long-term plans, with the former Liverpool defender taking on a role with soccer side Marine.

Carragher is set to take on an advisory role with Marine, the National League North club based in the north of Liverpool. Marine has enjoyed a remarkable rise in recent years, earning two promotions in the last five seasons while also benefiting financially from its memorable FA Cup third-round clash against Tottenham.

Carragher, who was born in Bootle and lives close to Rossett Park in Crosby, has closely followed the club’s impressive climb through the English soccer pyramid.

When Carragher, who made more than 700 appearances for Liverpool before retiring at the end of the 2012/13 season, hung up his boots, many expected the Merseyside-born star to move into coaching as a pathway toward management

However, he instead chose a different route, building a career in football media as a pundit and co-commentator for Sky Sports.

Reflecting on that decision in a special Sky Sports podcast in 2020, he explained his reasoning for stepping away from the managerial pathway. He said: "People always ask players, 'Are you going to become a manager?'

"Some people can't be bothered, and they get to the end of their career before they think about what they're going to do next. I was the opposite. If you'd asked me in my 20s, whether with England or with Liverpool, I'd have said I'd have been a manager.

"Former coaches were certain I would. But as I got closer to finishing my career, I started looking more at the pitfalls of management and the other options I had. Now, part of me thinks it was for the best I stayed away.

"10 or 15 years ago, my first thought when it came to entering management was probably 'hassle.' I used to look at it and think, 'Is it worth everything that you go through?'"

It was comments from Gerard Houllier that prompted Carragher to seriously consider a future in management after the end of his playing career. He explained: "I always remember Gerard Houllier saying that in management you were lucky if you had 10 moments where you'd look back at and think 'wow.'

"It's very difficult to have those types of moments as a manager and there's just so much hassle and stress along the way. You're just waiting for that moment at the end of a season - maybe a trophy or a promotion, whatever it may be.

"A lot of time for managers, those moments never come."

Carragher added: "There are a lot of things we don't see when it comes to management. Managers have to act, and rightly so: press conferences, speaking to players and I don't think they're themselves that often.

"They've got to play the actor all the time, and that must be difficult; speaking to players and trying to get them onside, possibly even those you don't rate or don't like, trying to get an agent onside to sign a player — there's constant need to put on this act. I don't really like people acting to me or being like that myself.
