Chelsea open to Xabi Alonso alternative taking the job after impressive talks

Chelsea have officially opened talks with Andoni Iraola as they step up their search for a new manager, and it seems as if they like what they’re seeing.

The search for a permanent manager at Chelsea has effectively narrowed down to a two-man race between Xabi Alonso and Andoni Iraola. While the club’s initial shortlist was broader, including names like Marco Silva and Oliver Glasner, the hierarchy has now intensified talks with these two.

It seems as if Alonso remains the first choice, favored for his experience.

However, the recruitment department is particularly impressed by the physicality and intensity he has instilled at Bournemouth, viewing it as the necessary antidote to Chelsea’s recent inconsistency.

With both candidates open to the project and out of work or soon-to-be available, the club is optimistic about finalising an appointment by mid-June to spearhead a crucial summer transition.

Chelsea impressed by Andoni Iraola

The Times shared an update on the Chelsea managerial situation, very much confirming that it’s a two-horse race between Alonso and Iraola.

Chelsea have met Iraola to talk to him about the role. There is respect for the Spaniard’s work with Bournemouth and a sense that he is more than capable of taking on a big job.

One of the big positives is the fact that he’s shown he can hack it in the Premier League, taking a Bournemouth side to just outside the top four and potentially even Champions League football.

Bournemouth’s record this season

Andoni Iraola’s philosophy is built on an aggressive high press, with the Cherries leading the league in winning possession in the final third. This intensity is backed by a solid defensive structure that concedes just 1.4 goals per game, thanks to a proactive approach that limits opponents’ time on the ball.

Offensively, they are clinical, averaging 1.7 goals per match. The balance of defensive steel and explosive transitions has made them a nightmare to play against this season.

Something that cannot be said about Chelsea.
