Frank Lampard has been told to target Nathan Ake
Frank Lampard should pursue a reunion with Nathan Ake to help Coventry City consolidate in the Premier League.
That’s according to former Manchester United defender Jaap Stam who has seen the centre back struggle for game time at Manchester City this season.
Indeed 31-year-old Ake has made only five Premier League starts in 2025/26 and with only one year left on his contract at the Etihad Stadium has already been linked with a move away.
Stam, who played for United for three years, reckons signing an experienced defender like Ake could have a similar impact for the Sky Blues next season, that Granit Xhaka has had with Sunderland this.
The Dutchman advised Lampard to target his compatriot: “Nathan Ake has a great personality, he's a clever player. I think he can use that to help other players around him to become better players. As a club, you need to look at that,” he told ComeOn.
“Having said that, with experienced players, sometimes when they go into smaller clubs, they think they always need to play. So you also need to have a look because he's older.
“You need to discuss the situation with him. Sometimes maybe he needs to have a little bit of extra rest so he stays fit for the whole season.
“He played with Frank Lampard at Chelsea so that would be a good combination, I think, because at Coventry, Frank has done a great job to bring them back to the Premier League.
“For Coventry as a club, it's a huge, huge success. With Nathan there, he could definitely help him and help that team.”
Lampard tended to rotate his central defenders last season, with Bobby Thomas, who scored the goal that took the club into the Premier League, Liam Kitching, Joel Latibeaudiere and Luke Woolfenden all starting at least ten games.
