The 2026 New York Jets are very likely to miss the playoffs, and they're certainly far from being a Super Bowl contender.
But, even if they miss the playoffs, they can still have a successful season. How? Well, the Jets will need their young players to thrive, and other long-term options to also produce as well.
For Aaron Glenn, this season is a make-or-break season. As ESPN's Rich Cimini highlighted, Glenn has no more excuses for his defense not to turn things around this season. There are three reasons why Glenn has no excuses, and they're all reasonable.
3 reasons why Aaron Glenn has no excuses for Jets defense
1. Glenn made himself the defensive playcaller
After the regular season ended, the Jets knew they were going to make some changes, especially on the defensive side of the ball, after failing to record a single interception.
Their defensive coordinator spot opened up, and there were plenty of rumors about who would be coming to New York to call plays for the defense. Wink Martindale was a hot topic for a while, but Glenn took on the role of playcaller instead.
If Glenn is going to make himself the playcaller, he has no excuse not to perform adequately for the Jets. If his defense doesn't perform, Glenn is likely to be out of a job.

2. Glenn called defensive playcalling his 'superpower'
If taking over defensive playcalling wasn't clear enough to pin the blame on Glenn for what the defense does in 2026, this comment certainly makes it his responsibility.
To claim that defensive playcalling is his "Superpower," Glenn has made what is likely his best trait well-known. Now, if the defense struggles, the thing that Glenn is best at will be something the Jets need to pivot from.
In such a scenario, there is little reason to keep Glenn on staff as a head coach who can't call plays offensively or defensively, and doesn't have the pedigree to remain in a CEO role.
3. All of the new starters and players on defense in one offseason
Last, and most important, is that Glenn's defense got a total makeover. As Cimini put it, "... and brought in a slew of new starters, perhaps as many as eight. ... This is Glenn's defense, built in Glenn's vision."
David Bailey, T'Vondre Sweat, Demario Davis, D'Angelo Ponds, Andre Cisco, Minkah Fitzpatrick, Nahshon Wright, Joseph Ossai, David Onyemata, Kinsgley Enagbare, and Darrell Jackson Jr. are new faces all slated to play significant time for Glenn.
With a ton of new faces added to the defense, with only Will McDonald, Harrison Phillips, Jarvis Brownlee Jr., and Brandon Stephens as returning potential starters, Glenn's defense is built in his image.
If this defense isn't good enough in 2026, it will be Glenn's fault. He helped build the roster, adding a ton of talented players to build his ideal defense.

3 reasons Aaron Glenn is out of excuses.
Between Glenn taking over playcalling himself, calling it his "superpower," and constructing a roster that's built to his preferences, Glenn has no excuse to find success this season.
Last year's defense was brutal, as they became the first team ever in NFL history to fail to record an interception in a season.
This is his defense, more so than it was last year. Glenn is out of time; he needs the Jets' defense to be better, otherwise, his time in New York as head coach might be coming to an end.
