Steven Gerrard says he 'wouldn't allow' LFC to sell 'complete' star to leave if it was up to him

There is a distinct chance that Liverpool sell Curtis Jones this summer, and club legend Steven Gerrard has spoken out against letting this happen.

Liverpool are entering a crucial phase and not just because of the uncertainty surrounding manager Arne Slot’s future.

Curtis Jones, who has spent his youth and senior career at Liverpool, may leave this summer.

Inter Milan have emerged as a realistic destination for the midfielder, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Italian journalist reported at the start of April: “Curtis Jones is fully open to joining Inter. He is keen on the project, the country, and the significant interest Inter have been showing him since January.

“Liverpool’s approval is still needed, and a fee has yet to be set, but his contract renewal is, as things stand, completely on hold.”

Gerrard has now discussed the possibility of Jones leaving, and he’s not on board.

Steven Gerrard urges Liverpool not to sell Curtis Jones

Gerrard has urged Liverpool to rethink letting Jones leave, stating that he “wouldn’t allow” it to happen if it was his decision to make.

He told BFM Radio: “I think the academy system at our club is crucial and vital. It’s important we keep producing homegrown talents.

“I think naturally, being around the city, growing up in the city, we understand the demands of the club, the style, what the fans want.

“It’s embedded in us because we know the city inside out.

“I wouldn’t allow Curtis Jones to leave. I wished and hoped that Trent didn’t leave us.

“Certainly, you’ll understand and respect every player has got their own career and can make their own decisions.”

Liverpool are throwing away their best midfield controller if they let Jones leave

Now 25, Jones is entering his best years, and it should come as no surprise to learn that the Scouser wants to be playing more regularly after spending years as a squad player.

There is no doubt that he is good enough to be playing as a starter in the Premier League and, indeed, abroad. Inter Milan have been linked quite heavily in recent weeks. He would be a good fit for the Italian side and would flourish in a league where the emphasis is on technical quality as much as physical competency.

Liverpool have lacked direction in midfield this season, and it’s my opinion that, with Alexis Mac Allister in decline, Jones should have been given more minutes than he has.

Jones has played 2,409 minutes this season, starting just 16 Premier League games. Despite describing Jones as a ‘complete‘ midfielder, Slot has shown a lack of trust in the 25-year-old.
