Jets sign ex-Jaguars, Broncos WR with 18 career touchdowns

The New York Jets have agreed to sign free agent receiver Tim Patrick. The big-bodied pass catcher is 6-foot-5, and he thrives as a possession receiver and red zone threat who can win 50-50 balls. Patrick most recently played for the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he appeared in all 16 games and racked up 15 catches for 187 yards.

Prior to that, Patrick played for the Detroit Lions in 2024. He hasn't been quite the same player since missing back-to-back seasons with ACL and achilles injuries, but he provides needed receiver depth for New York. The team has Garrett Wilson, who is one of the best pass catchers in the NFL, and they have high hopes for the recently drafted Omar Cooper, but there isn't a lot of talent behind those two.

Geno Smith is a journeyman who needs all of the help he can get, and Patrick can serve as a security blanket for the new quarterback. Patrick's best days came with the Denver Broncos. Over four seasons with the team, the Utah product accumulated 143 catches and 2,009 receiving yards.

The hope is that, now a couple of years removed from serious lower-body injuries, Patrick will start to look more like his former self. The athleticism and route running that were once serviceable have seen major regression in recent years, but at his best, Patrick is a great fit for the Jets. He won't have a guaranteed role in New York, but there is a path for him to make the 53-man roster. That is somewhat of a rarity for players who sign this late into the offseason.

Rich Cimini was the first to report the news of Patrick's signing.
