Packers add Jerry Rice's son to roster in surprising move

The Green Bay Packers made a surprising roster move on Thursday.

According to Pro Football Talk’s Josh Alper, the Packers added Jerry Rice’s 24-year-old son to their roster.

“Wide receiver Brenden Rice is on to Green Bay,” Alper reported. “According to multiple reports, the Packers have claimed Rice off of waivers. The (Las Vegas) Raiders waived Rice when they signed linebacker Cameron McGrone this week.”

“Rice, who is the son of Hall of Famer Jerry Rice, joined the Raiders’ practice squad late last season. He also spent time on the practice squads of the (Seattle) Seahawks and (New England) Patriots after being waived by the (Los Angeles) Chargers in August.”

“Rice was a 2024 seventh-round pick by Los Angeles, and he appeared in three games during his rookie season. He played three offensive snaps and 10 special teams snaps over those appearances.”

Before joining the NFL in 2024, Rice enjoyed a standout senior season at USC with Caleb Williams at quarterback. Rice finished the year with 45 receptions for 791 yards on a Trojans squad that boasted a 7-5 regular season record and prevailed in the DirectTV Holiday Bowl over Louisville.

Things haven’t been smooth for the 6-foot-3 wideout in the big leagues, though, as he’s already competed with four franchises in two full seasons. Perhaps Rice will find his groove with Green Bay and follow in his father’s legendary footsteps.
