Ex-Manchester United star Jaap Stam thinks Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai should be in the running for the PFA Player of the Year.

The Hungarian international has been the Reds’ standout performer despite it being a very difficult season for Arne Slot‘s side.

While Stam says Bruno Fernandes is his favourite for the accolade, he thinks Szoboszlai does deserve more recognition for his efforts:

“I understand Gabriel being talked about as the player of the season for his defending and goalscoring and his role at Arsenal, but for me it should be Bruno Fernandes.”

“I think another player who could be up there is Dominik Szoboszlai from Liverpool. I’m not sure if they talk about him for this award.”

Szoboszlai’s season for Liverpool in numbers

The 25-year-old has racked up double figures for both goals (13) and assists (10) in all competitions this campaign.

It is undoubtedly the most productive year that Szoboszlai has had since signing from RB Leipzig for £60m in the summer of 2023.

He managed 12 goal contributions (7 goals and 5 assists in total) in 2023/24 and 17 (8 goals and 9 assists) in 2024/25.

Who is the favourite for the PFA Player of the Year?

Fernandes is odds-on at the bookmakers. The Portuguese international is just one assist shy of the Premier League record.

Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice is second among the runners and riders, while Manchester City striker Erling Haaland is third.

Szoboszlai doesn’t really feature in the conversation, with betting firms pricing him at anything between 50/1 and 500/1. It seems the Reds’ disappointing season has overshadowed the Hungarian’s achievements for many.
