The Dolphins signed De'Von Achane to a historic NFL extension after the Jets signed Breece Hall
The AFC East will see familiarity at the running back position next season after the Miami Dolphins followed the New York Jets into the expensive business of paying their trusted backfield stars long-term money.
The Dolphins have reportedly locked in De’Von Achane with a four-year, $68 million extension. That deal puts the first-time Pro Bowler right up there among the NFL's highest-paid running backs.
The move was announced shortly after division rival New York Jets locked down Breece Hall with a three-year, $45.75 million extension to keep him under contract through 2028.

Hall admitted to being teary-eyed before signing the deal while reflecting on the torn ACL that shortened his 2022 season.

Both teams are trying to lock in their offensive identity after big offseason changes. Miami heads into 2026 with a new look after firing head coach Mike McDaniel and bringing in former Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley.
The Dolphins have also moved on from quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. Not long ago, Tua, Achane, and Hill were the trio behind Miami’s record-setting 70-point game against Denver in 2023.
In just 44 career games, the former Texas A&M speedster has racked up 3,057 rushing yards and rushed for 5.6 yards per carry, along with scoring 22 touchdowns on the ground.

The Dolphins running back also caught a career 172 passes for 1,277 yards and 13 touchdowns, building a reputation as a player who can turn a short catch into a big gain.
Achane was the second-leading receiver for Miami last season after none of its pass catchers crossed the 1,000 mark. His 1,350 total yards and eight touchdowns on the ground last season made him even more valuable to Miami, as the only runner on the team to surpass 300 rushing yards.
The Jets see Hall as just as important, even though his style is a bit different. Hall ran for 1,065 yards and added 350 more as a receiver last season as New York’s most reliable offensive threat.

The comparison between the two backs currently favors Achane statistically and financially. Achane also holds a 3-1 head-to-head advantage over Hall and has produced better efficiency numbers.
The Dolphins RB now sits at third in the league with a $17 million average annual salary, only shy of Philadelphia Eagles former offensive player of the year and Super Bowl champion Saquon Barkley, three-time Pro Bowler and MVP candidate Jonathan Taylor, and Hall himself.
His $68 million deal is the biggest contract for any NFL running back, putting him ahead of Arizona rookie Jeremiyah Love. When he was drafted third overall in 2026, Love's fully guaranteed $53.02 million rookie contract set a new record for RB guaranteed money.
