The promise Geovany Quenda made himself ahead of Chelsea move this summer

Sporting winger Geovany Quenda is set to join Chelsea for the 2026/27 campaign.

This is Quenda’s final season at Sporting, and it is fair to say that not everything has gone according to plan, unfortunately.

In December, the 19-year-old suffered a fractured metatarsal and only returned to action last month.

SCENARIO: Chelsea are closing in on the signing of Yan Diomande but must sell one of their current wingers first…

Who are you sacrificing? 👋

Pedro Neto

Estevao Willian

Alejandro Garnacho

Jamie Gittens

Quenda did his rehabilitation at his future club Chelsea, but the Portugal Under-21 international never forgot about his current employers during that time.

According to A Bola, Quenda did not want to move to Chelsea without scoring another goal for Sporting and promised to do so upon his return from injury. On Monday, he was able to do just that.

In Sporting’s 4-1 win against Rio Ave in the Portuguese league, Quenda scored in the 90th minute, the first time he has found the back of the net since November.

It was the Sporting youngster’s sixth goal in all competitions, while he has also managed to register eight assists this season.

Quenda is expected to remain with Chelsea’s first-team squad next term, and it will be interesting to see how he is used.

Under Ruben Amorim at Sporting, Quenda played as a right wing-back and had great success there. Xabi Alonso likes to use a 3-4-2-1 formation, so it is a role he could occupy at Chelsea if the Spaniard replaces Liam Rosenior as manager.

Alonso has reportedly been on Chelsea’s radar for years and now looks like the favourite to become their new head coach.

Quenda could also play on the left, with neither Alejandro Garnacho nor Jamie Gittens able to nail down the position there. Gittens has been injured for a large part of the campaign.

Quenda’s best role, though, is probably right winger. It means he could be directly competing against Estevao Willian and Pedro Neto for a starting spot next season.
